Gorilla Marketing Tactics

Gorilla marketing (or Guerrilla Marketing) is a way of promoting on very low budgets, by relying mostly on your time, energy, ideas, imagination and strategies - rather than traditional huge marketing budgets. I personally prefer to describe it in a simpler way; Using Social Media is, in fact, Gorilla Marketing.

When we see small shops (startups) with no marketing budgets make campaigns that affect millions of people, spread virally within minutes and rank top spots on search engines; we see gorilla marketing tactics taking place. I’m sure all of you must have seen the new high-budget Microsoft ads with Bill Gates and Seinfeld. Food for thought: did they actually increase their brand value in your eyes in any way? Probably not. Now think about the simple hug campaign video that was launched and spread like fire in the online world. Which of those videos will have a lasting impact on you as a viewer? Which of the videos are you more likely to remember and pass on to your friends? This evidently proves one very important fact: marketing budget is not directly related to the success of a campaign; creativity is…

Who would have thought that marketing could be so cheap! It still takes time when we have to pay for it and now with the aid of social media we can get the word out in so many different manners, either only once, or put it on a video to send to everyone or make a series of events. good bye newspaper ads....
  • Last night a friend showed me a youtube video (just a fun laugh about some people who were creative ata wedding ) it has caught on virally and this morning over a million more people had watched it when I showed it to my wife. If that doesn't tell us something about how effective social media marketting can be nothing will. Simon explains this to us in his book in various lucid examples. Tx simon
  • Over and over marketting online seems to be about brains and not bucks - I love that simon's book on social traffic brings that point home. he recognises that effective marketting is about reaching the people you want to SERVE.If people feel that they spread the word.
  • I love Rebecca Happy's perspective here. Social media and word of mouth marketing do give home to the entrepreneur. You don't have to have enormous budgets to make an impact. Simon U Ford's Social Media VIP team is social proof. He has mobilized a small team that has made huge impact.

Oh dear i do get what your saying but.... what hug campaign?
  • Search YouTube for hug campaign.
  • I read this post yesterday and I had to come back again today because the photo has been stuck in my head for the last 24 hours.

I'm sure I've seen this photo in one of your other posts, but I never really paid too much attention to it. Yesterday something caught my attention and I wasn't sure what it was...so I came back today to double check.

That's you in the photo isn't it Simon?

No wonder you know so much about Gorilla Marketing...it looks like you trained with gorilla's FOR REAL!
  • Absolutely, we use to hike for two days into the mountains of Uganda / Zaire to visit the Gorillas in the wild. They would expect a group of humans every day at the same time. We would sit with them for an hour then hike back to base camp,... they taught me everything I know.

Creativity is the key and Simon has shared so much of that in these blogs. Love Gorilla marketing as that is truly what marketing with Social Media is.

Great examples are building value in communities and developing new contacts. Much more effective building relationships and commenting where people can know you versus buying expensive print advertising. By working as a team we can get a lot of traffic to sites versus the old print media. Thanks Simon!
  • Been thinking about this again. If Social Media is the 4th Revolution - Clay Shirky. And its distinctive feature in the ability to communicate bi- directionally between groups. This is equivalent to putting Gorilla marketing on steroids. Normally with Gorilla Marketing - the creativity and limited budget (usually of an individual) is multiplied by the possibilty of having a group conducting your campaign with you. An example of the would be your followers ReTweeting you in Twitter
  • Its no longer Guerilla WARFARE - its now Guerilla PLAY FAIR! I love what Simon says about the fact that it down to creativity and time, energy and vitality. Those without money can finally win the race - its about the using the FREE commodities we all possess - ideas, imagination and strategy. More significantly its about those with CREDIBLE ideas, imagination and strategy that are going to win the day when it comes to marketting. Its time to go APE and use Guerilla marketting to its full potential!!!!
  • This is great news for all the creatives and artists out there that want to get their business going. Social media has leveled the ground and as Steve remarked is leaving a lot of the biggies behind as they clung on too long.
It is certainly exciting to be apart of ST and also to see it unfold as 100 pound gorilla making a path.
  • Gorilla marketing as discussed by Simon Ford is about pure creativity. Old school ""throw money at it" is the reason many Ad Agencies and TV stations are struggling and seeing the decreases in revenues they report. Gorilla marketing is about being Smart. Being Smart is about being on Track, In vogue, In Click! Gorilla Marketing or Social Media Marketing is no linger the New Marketing its the NOW marketing. Clear article by Simon Ford...again
  • Steve - I enjoy your perspective. It is about being smart and also about being focused. It is about NOW and about knowing who you are, what you want to be and how you are going to get there. Guerillas can't afford to sit back and wait to get what they want. They have to be proactive!

The goal of gorilla marketing is to have an unique, buzz generating idea. Jay Conrad came up with the phrase in his book Gorilla Marketing. I've seen stunts and unusual marketing ideas to get a big effect and and eventually go viral. This effect could take a small company or single person to see huge success simply by seeing this viral idea take effect.
  • Karin,

I agree that STi is a 100 pound gorilla. We will leave a path through the forest that others will try to follow. In some ways others are already trying to follow what we are doing without understanding the strategies behind our actions.

  • I'm sure that tons of people are already working on their version of us, which is flattering. The truth is that they will never quite get what we are about unless they enter into the gates of STi.

Social Traffic is breaking new ground in Social Media. Most people will focus on the tools we use, never realizing that the secret is actually the community.

    Jonathan:

That is so true, Jonathan, that most people will focus on the different elements of Social Media, instead of the community. The community is where the TRUE POWER lies! The truth is, it's all about connection with others, the human element. I like how Simon's book, Social Traffic, gives the entire blueprint of how Social Media really works, and how to construct one's campaign. There is much, much more than meets the eye with Social Media, and a well-planned effort will give one many rewards!
  • If Gorilla marketing is a way of promoting on very low budgets, by relying mostly on your time, energy, ideas, imagination and strategies - rather than traditional huge marketing budgets, than Social Traffic is a Gorilla company, relying mostly on time, energy, ideas, imaginaton and dynamite strategies, rather than the big investment firms! I would like to add that Social Traffic is not just a Gorilla company, it is a 100 lbs Gorilla company. It is having a lot of momentum going and I predict that it will burst out of its seams pretty soon.
How many companies do you know that are build from the ground up, without investment capital, relying completely on human efforts.
