Is Facebook good for event managers?

This is a discussion in which I would like to hear your opinions and thoughts, more than share my own. I have seen how different organizers have made interesting groups in facebook for connecting with their existing clients, attracting new businesses or for networking with other professionals in their fields. Its great to see how facebook provides an environment which is conducive to building these relationships. In the comments, share your stories on how you think facebook benefits you to manage or market your events better.

Throughout my life, I have been studying and testing ways of how to effectively market events. I discovered soon enough that it all comes down to getting people excited about a thing and enabling them to build their own stories around it. Building evangelists. Evangelists are people who are sold on your service so much that they go around marketing it for you – for free! I found out about the “American Idol 2006 concert” through a fan even before it was announced. About the details of the “Macworld” through a fan. About a local “Eastern fusion dance party” through a fan. So if these fans are so good at marketing events to other people, imagine what they can do for your business.

Do you think Facebook allows you to build fans and spread excitement about your events? Let us know your thoughts.

I think so. And so do our users. Many of them are asking for the opposite functionality. They would like their agenda (google calendar for example) to be synced with their facebook events. This especially the case for bands.
  • Now that I've learned so much from the Social Traffic course, I think I'll go back and revisit how to use Facebook to promote my radio broadcasts, both past and future. My show has been on hiatus for the summer, so it will be good to apply the knowledge.
  • I have to admit that my first foray into using Facebook for promoting my radio show had totally lackluster results, but I had not yet begun starting to build my business use of Facebook, i.e. adding business connections versus just my family/friend connections. So I would say that success or failure will be tied to what you've been talking about in other blogs Simon, tied to knowing your audience and speaking to their needs, not just adding numbers for numbers sake and trying to blanket them with info about your event/product through every possible channel. If you aren't an authority on the problems you are trying to solve, why should they come to you for the solution?
  • @simonford Truthfully, Never used it much until you came along. Now I have a whirlwind everyday. I have not tried events yet, but see alot doing myblogtalk using it regularly and building their auidences.
I can only assume they would not do it if it did not work.

I do believe if you can harness the power of facebook you would have a great platform, I find the conversations are very rewarding.
  • absolutely. gold mine for event managers. you can compile your interested peers along with whoever is already evangelizing for your client. does a lot for your event and is a good way to get feedback from the people you'll be serving at the event waaaay before you have a chance to spend to much on something they don't want and other ideas.
great for nonprofits even more so because it's free, viral-- and with a few evangelists you can compile contacts and reach a very broad base with the message of your event. ~@insearchofsanuk

I find that Facebook does allow you the opportunity to network to a variety of individuals. It does however take a great deal of time and effort to built up a particular audience. In order to entice individuals that are particularly interested in what you're about takes a great deal of patience and perseverance. With that being said, once that audience has been established it is an easy venue to get your message and your intentions across. In the case of listing Events, if that audience is there for that intended purpose it is indeed a great venue.
