Why social media?

Social media is something which you just cannot ignore. Whatever industry you are working in, it is amazing how much influence social media can have on your business, you just need to know how to use it to your advantage.

Social media marketing basically defines how you can use online channels to market your products, get traffic, convert people into customers, get your conversation started, etc. So when you’re planning your marketing mix, it is important to understand the dynamics of different social media tools to find the right ones for your business. You can’t just put them all up and expect magic to happen. What works for a online clothing store may not work for a web services company and so on.

That is why we keep reminding you not to follow someone else’s best practices by the book, figure out what will work for your business or get a consultant to do that for you. If you are an event manager, figure out what tools to use for maximum impact: e.g. you may want to create an online page for an event and choose not to for another. Will a short-lived fame from getting highlighted on Techcrunch or Digg help you or will creating an authoritative blog about your industry? Are different internet marketing techniques like SEO and PPC going to work for your launch or event or are they just hyperboles? You need to know how to make these important decisions effectively, and for that you need to understand the impact of social media on launches, events and any other services.

The truth is that the world has changed. People, audiences, consumers, business are all looking for more value from everything that is offered to them. You see it all around you in the offline world, where even food joints are giving out upsize meals. Translate that to the online world and everything multiplies exponentially. Its easier, its more powerful, it has more of an outreach and most of it is available for free.

Well, the question that comes to mind is that if there are so many free ways of marketing online, why isn’t everyone doing a great job at it. One of the reason could be that the face of the online world is constantly evolving and you need to be at the foremost in order to know what’s going on. I guess that’s where posts like these come into place - we’ve worked, consulted, tried, tested, experienced, experimented and think that we have gained considerable knowledge that we can now share.

We will be sharing a whole series of step by step guidelines on how to market your events through multiple channels and how to use different online platforms to your advantage. The guidelines will be posted on a daily basis on this blog. Do check it out whenever you can.

  • This is a great post. I wish "the writer"of this piece had used a real name. Wherever I am in Social Media, I notice that people like to talk to real people.
You are your brand, and that's really what social media is all about...making friends, building relationships on line. I'm a marketing person and a writer and speak at many conferences.
Recently, someone from one of my audiences met up with me on a LInkedIn discussion and we were discussing a subject that he wanted covered in an upcoming event...so they invited me to speak there.
I hear about most of the conferences, and meetings and organizations from my social media network. Yesterday I heard from a local art museum that I didn't even know existed...the Frost Museum right in my area. They invited me to an Art Basel party this Sunday night.
So, you're right, this is a free way to advertise, and much more important, a way to build relationships with people who can inform you about events, teach you new things about your business (and life) and grow your network of people around the world.
It is a a huge opportunity for us all to find our own voice and let it resonate to people we'd never have the opportunity to meet in our daily busy lives.

  • There are literally thousands of social media sites. It is not easy to pick the right ones for your business, if you don't understand how to use social media. I was struggling with this for the longest time. Why should I use one social media site and not another.
Once I started reading your blogs and your ebook and I participated in your course I started to put the big picture together. Now it is much easier to decide what works and what does not in my field.
I have the understanding (that I never used to have) what the purpose is of the various sites and how to tie them all together. I have to say that social media is even more powerful than I thought when I started out.
I have my social media business plan in place and whenever I wonder if I should use another social media site I look at my plan and see if it fits into it. If it does I will test it and see if it adds value. At that point the decision is easy.
  • Social Media and SMO (social media optimization) are big buzz terms right now just like SEO has been for years.

I think people are missing the most basic thing, being themselves. Social Media is just another tool to amplify who are and what you're about. The reason people aren't all GREAT at this marketing medium is because they forget to be themselves.

Your online presence should be no different than your offline presence. When you start out you have to figure out Simon's famous three questions:

    Who am I?
    Who am I not?
Who do I want to be?

With a clear understanding of these three questions you can set forth creating your Social Media footprint. This type of networking is no different than any other at it most basic. You have to meet people, provide them value, and gain their trust.

There's a lot of confusion as to how to use this "Social Media Stuff" and I have to thank you Simon for helping clarify it for me. Everyday I work with you and the Social Traffic team I get to know myself better, and become a better me.
