Celebration Of Empowerment

When New Media began to catch pace in 2006, we all saw the remarkable cover of Time’s magazine Person of the Year. You. Us. We. Our beautiful little ‘one’ world.

Lev’s words still ring in the ears, not because it was unexpected, but because sometimes we’re so engrossed in something the reality of it doesn’t really hit us. To quote Lev:

“It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes. We’re looking at an explosion of productivity and innovation, and it’s just getting started, as millions of minds that would otherwise have drowned in obscurity get backhauled into the global intellectual economy.”

  • Yes, I would totally agree that we are now empowered, but I think we are still "settling". We are fed SO MUCH every day electronically. It is like sitting on a rolling chair in front of an amazing buffet. You just can't consume it all. The next step is true multi-dimensional filtering. I see single dimensional filtering, but it doesn't let me change my motivation from one visit to the next. Syndicated multi-dimensional profiles are next. I just say who I am right now and my preferences follow me. We call it "eTwin™" or electronic twin.
  • I love DEe Jay's brave and honest revealing of how Social Media has affected her world. Her authenticity is so palpable and it tells the story of the power of Social Media so well - Wise Vendors will include their target market and make them feel comfortable whether they are introverted or not - flying high in Times Square or simply buying online. An INCLUSIVE AUTHENTIC approach to the buyer is now the route to success - it is as Dee Jay states, life changing. Simon brings home this truth very clearly in his book and it stays iwth one long after the reading - a real treat when wisdom is enduring and resonates with others
  • Simon puts it so well in his book - The hunters are now the huntees! We have the Power to say yes or no - WE THE LITTLE MEN AND WOMEN of the world are the ones who decides who is credible who is worth following. Social Media rests on the laurels of itself - it works cause I count and YOU COUNT - So viva to Time's realisation but I think Simon says it best - the millions that didn't have a voice are no longer hidden in obscurity, they are at home and at work using social media to make themselves heard and we can harness this to our best marketting advantage if we stay SINCERE AND AUTHENTIC in our marketting agenda
  • Most people see Africa as the dark continent but we got the concept of 'I am nothing without you' a long time ago. This notion of 'ubuntu' has been at the forefront of human survival for centuries and now, at last, the most modern of our advancements namely social media marketting is resting on this premise. 'I will only be successful if you make me successful and you will only do that if I seem credible to you, worthy of your respect and true to my word' Simon's book makes this point lucidly and profoundly. As DEe Jay Says so well WE is POWER.
  • So many great comments here ! ALL so true. WE are the POWER now through Social Media. At the pace we are developing it is frighteining to think of what will happen to those who miss the Social Traffic boat. That is not to say they can never catch up, of course anyone can, but if we consider oursleves to be the early adopters we will have so much more knowledge and empowerment to bring to our buiness associates, friends, family and loved ones in the exciting and exploding future of the internet.
  • It is a great time to be alive for many reasons. I find it intriguing that things are changing the world and how to world changes is being changed too. It is an anthropologist's and sociologist's treasure chest
  • Because of Tim Berners-Lee and the minds his thoughts intrigued
we have become the Global Community -- Empowered & Achieved
Empowered in our demand for quality relationships to get our vote
Achieve in our impact on the marketplace: "Be Nice" - a NYTimes quote
No longer is it OK to think of people as consumers, users, numbers
The audience that is US is no longer hobbled, blind or slumbers
We talk to each other and gather consensus, social proof tells all
Wise vendors know their future is tied to the customer service call
They're pleased to engage, give value, get opinions, discover the needs
of the people whose satisfaction and recognized relevance realistically feeds
the service provider's lifestyle, children and their dreams. Community lives
LARGE because WE have found our Voices: Social Media nicely sieves
the sought from naught; value from junk; authenticity from posing and more
Winners provide what their populations want. They know what Community's for.

  • I love your comments here DeeJay.

The global community which has evolved and is still evolving, changing and developing in front of our eyes is matched in many ways by our own (at least mine) metamorphosis, as we chose to uncover our faults, failings and sensitivities in front of this new media empowered world. Where we would have chosen to hide the truth we now unveil and where we would have coloured the glass to paint a different picture we now pull back the curtains, let the light pour in and show the world the candid truth. Take it or leave it this is who WE are.

This creates growth, self discovery and peace of mind.

If business owners want to survive in this new world they have to follow in our footsteps or we will simply leave them behind...

  • Yes, Neil, it's aMAZing. As I watch my OWN metamorphic transformation unfold, I am -- more than anything else, astonished that it: 1.) took SO long (in terms of the years I've already lived, 2.) that the changes taking place are so DEEP, 3.) that it's all come about from relationships built ONLINE! As I have shared more than once, heretofore I have been the picture of Introversion, content to sit wherever, doing whatever I was interested in at the time -- none of which EVER included just going out to be with others, or even going out of my way (in any way, shape, or form) to invite people into my world. YET, as a direct result of having met Simon, online, and becoming so TOTALLY wowed by what he offers, I am leap frogging over past restrictions or mile-high barriers that would have stopped me dead in my tracks before. Witness my YouTube testimonial to Simon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z4DGpKrKfs. Nothing, as I say during that testimonial, would have prompted me to put myself out there like that except the MIRACLE I see Simon and the way his mind works as being.

I guess it's like that old saying: When the student is ready, the teacher appears. (My question, though, I'm not willing to spend any REAL time on pursuing its answer, is: Why'd it take me SO long to be ready?) Such is life, I suppose. It's up to each of us to live it with the highest amount of integrity possible and to ensure the fact that those we trust are folk cut from that exact same cloth. I LOVE what the world is coming to. I LOVE being a part of THIS way of being!

Peace and Love to You Neil,
    DeeJay
  • I am so glad you have decided to put yourself outside your little bubble Dee Jay. Your words are rich with meaning and layers. I do so love reading them and being challenged to think through your thoughts.
  • Actually, Rebecca, it hasn't been so much a decision to put myself out there, as it's been the recognition of the fact that the air inside my bubble is NOT life-sustaining; that it is -- as harsh as it may sound -- pattently life-denying! This flies in the face of the person I see myself as being. So, I've put the hermit lifestyle behind me, because it's really NO style at all!

Peace and Love to You Rebecca!

Familiar? sounds like social traffic to me.
  • I believe this is a positive change for the good that we all must embrace rather then fear to truly be a part of this new world we are a part of.

  • I am in awe at the way social media is changing how we connect.

The power has shifted. The few now have enough power to reach many. The viral nature of sharing information has shifted the way we connect FOREVER.
  • Nicole VJ Allen
I feel like we are shifting back to our ancestral roots, from a view of only looking out for #1 and returning to a place where we realize that all for one and one for all is a better, faster and smarter way of being in the world.
  • Nice to remember Alexander Dumas!
  • No doubt or question about it: We IS Power, more powerfully than EVER before.
  • The way the World is changing is as never before
