Words Are Everything

Keyword research is one of the most important pillars in internet marketing and social media. Just think about how information is sourced to you when you search using Google, or how Bookmarking sites are categorized by tags. Let’s take a step back and understand a very important concept first. Forget the jargons - these tags and keyword phrases are basically just WORDS. Why is it that some words dominate search engines, while some don’t. Some are heavily sought out and some aren’t even given the least attention. If you can understand the power of words, you will be able to effectively increase your event marketing output significantly.

Two companies offering the exact same service can have different branding impacts based on the words that they choose to describe their service. To illustrate my point, I’ll share two different ads that I recently read in a newspaper.

1- “Joe’s building & renovation services - Quick, cheap and professional! (Charging 30% less for the same efforts and spending 25% more on sales and advertising against competition like)”

2- “Hand crafted restorations - Rebuilding homes using restored, antique timbers since 1982”

Even though, both companies can be operating in the same manner in the same locality, their choice of words distinguish their business philosophies considerably.

The emphasis on words is everywhere online. Google generates 10 billion dollars a year in sales revenue from their customers bidding on words! Competitors bid prices to have their websites advertised on pages of organic search results shown to people using particular words to find solutions to their problems. This chapter is dedicated to understanding these differences.

Keywords are foundational to one's blog, ezine articles, YouTube videos, etc. In fact, I like to think of it as branding my business. Keywords seem like such a minor thing, but now I realize how powerful they are, and how important it is to promote a business. Simon wrote an article about how to stay one step ahead of the game by keeping abreast of what will be talked about in the future, and then using those keywords in creative ways so that you will be the one to top the Google search engines when people look for those words in the future!

  • Tagging with photos does interesting things to key word searching - it hooks people in pictorially but keeps them there with words. This attracts a market that perhaps words alone would not - more people into the sales funnel using different tactics. Simons video has helped me to think laterally about these issues thanks! • I love Neil Ashworths point about how the term investment opportunity and make money online are seen to attract a different level of buyer. This makes us really have to think hard about what key words we choose. Using social traffic as a term assumes a certain level of computer literacy whereas social media marketting does not...same point but just a thought about how we market ourselves. Simon's video helps give clarity on this issue too. Google Friend Connect
  • Yes Doug is right it is so simple when you know how and Simon teaches the HOW - going to Google external word is the key and then the rest follows. His book is no different - just brilliantly structured examples that make SM marketting accessible to us all and allowing us all to share in the success. • I wonder how the whole keyword industry will evolve. Two years ago, you could buy targeted keywords in the travel industry for less than $0.20 CPC and now to get on the first screen, it is often $1.00 for highly targeted keywords. It is virtually impossible to get an ROI on that kind of spending, particularly since conversion rates are still averaging about 1%. We have to start focusing on why people aren't converting. I'll bet that marketers and web builders have forgotten the relationship ladder.
  • As silly as it may seem I hadn't really paid attention to keyword research when I started my blog. I figured I was getting my traffic from social media, which meant I was pushing them there manually, so I thought I didn't need it.

When I hired Joao as my webmaster he set me straight. I realized that social media traffic was not enough. Yeah, there are a lot of people on social media, but there are way more using Google search every second of the day.

By taking some time to research keywords that related to my niche I've increased traffic.

Thanks for the tip on Keyword Elite. If you're using it then I know it's good.
  • Here they are again..those keywords. It seems that they are indeed key too.No wonder Marcus has made them a central part to his business in helping others on line.
There are always new pointers I pick up every time I read Simon.s blogs or book. This time it was the importance of not diluting the density of the key words. Keep focused but not too and not too many or they will just meld into the flood of info and noise and not be found. So much to learn! It is great to have someone like Simon with such an analytical mind and great team to do all the extensive testing.
  • Its simply a non starter to put something on the web and not tag it. No more no less. Simon's book brings that home to us all - very lucidly. His description of HOW to do tagging makes it impossible to ignore - simplicity and clarity Thanks Social Traffic - I get it.
  • Key word tagging is where it's at! Simons book on Social Traffic makes this point brilliantly - in fact if you type in Social Traffic it is not an accident that he is at the top of the list when it comes to courses. He must know something if he is getting the highest rankings over and over again. Thanks Simon - I appreciate the authentic input. And the generous way in which you hand it over.
  • If a picture paints a thousand words then the right word paints a thousand pictures! It conjures up all sorts of images for the individual and we need to be aware that people have very different associations for words. Simon's lucid example on home restoration brings this fact home to us. Simon's book is full of these clear rational explanations. Thanks for making my business more successful!
  • Simon's book has taught me alot about marketting but the real cinch has been your input on Keywords! This has made the difference to me being noticed online versus being invisible on line. I see how much time I wasted before and now I see things develop before my eyes. The right words do magic and Simon brings this home to us with real clarity.

Words are so powerful in connecting to our audience. By studying the market ahead of time and doing research on the market and our competition we can see which words they are responding too. Having the right keyword tool can help us identify those words and really niche down the phrases that people are searching for to help them with receiving the info they need thereby increasing our profits too. Simply amazing the Google stat listed above. Thanks Simon!
  • It is so interesting how the nuance not only of words, but of punctuation and capitalization can affect the use of keywords and tagging and how it is indexed. I appreciate all of the time that Simon takes to test all of this out, so that we don't have to resort to the trial and error that so many folks are having to go through.
  • If you really want to fast track your success in anything, its about the extra effort and care you put into things. Imagine writing an article and keeping it secretly locked in your bottom drawer. Well thats what most people do who dont take the trouble to tag their articles or Blogs. Like most things there is an Art and a Science part to it. The Art is the Writing, the Science is the Tagging. Simon really knows his stuff. I often read and re-read his articles
  • Absolutely, proper keyword research is the foundation of any marketing effort and the tools we have online make it so easy for us to properly target our sites that it's amazing to me that so few people do it.

All you have to do is use Google's external keyword tool to find out exactly how many people are searching on each term and then go see what the competition is like through a Google search. It's so simple.

    Doug
  • This is the foundation block to any marketing efforts that many people overlook and leave it to chance. It requires understanding the core business and the target customers and aligning them together. It may even be that you choose a word that generates a lot of traffic without translating into sales. This is where the 'catch all' keyword strategies become tricky.
  • It is so true. Words are how we communicate online. We don't have the luxury of watching people's body language and we cannot gauge their mood by watching facial expressions. The story is only in the words. This makes it critically important that we pick the right ones, and it is even more important that we pick the right keywords.

I have used keyword elite for quite a while, and it is a great tool. However, it takes more than a tool to make the right decisions. The above example clearly shows how you can create a different impression simply by choosing a different keyword and sentence structure.

I still feel that I am not good at doing this. I don't feel comfortable with my own choices and am always second guessing if I did the right thing. But I have learned one thing and that is, not to look back, but to go with my decision. Even if the keywords are far from optimal, you will be found if you produce enough and the content adds value.
  • Keyword research is an area every online business builder should understand thoroughly as it is an eye opener what people actually search for online. I recently ran a campaign using a long tail keyword phrase which I would have never imagined people would search for and in a matter of days not only was I at #1 and #2 on Google for that specific search but I was generating traffic to my site from it also. All the traffic by the way was free and generated using two of the techniques discussed in your book.

A great tool I use is Wordtracker but there are others out there which will pay you back tenfold on your investment if used and applied correctly.

You make a good point about the choice and costs of keywords in Google advertising campaigns - this not only comes down to the demand for those phrases but also what people are willing to pay for the phrase - an example of this is the phrase 'investment opportunity' as opposed to 'make money online' - although both are competitive the person searching for either term is seen as a different type of buyer and so the costs associated in selling to the investor as opposed to the money maker are higher (even if you are selling the same product to both).

Over time this will continue to drive the costs of PPC advertising higher, so that inevitably the only affordable means of advertising online (unles you have a high priced/high converting product) will be through generating organic search traffic - another reason for social media marketing knowledge if anyone needed it.
  • Great keywords are the difference between attention and no attention. When I found a great keyword tool it made a huge difference. It is a difference between a waste of time or getting great results for Business Online.

Simon, words are so powerful! Great article showing the power of how words can influence whether someone clicks on your website or not as to whether the words used will give them a benefit and solve their problem! I totally agree that words can influence your event marketing output significantly if picked properly and used right. You can change someone's life is your words can help trigger a solution to what in their eyes is their problem. Your book Social Traffic is just awesome!
