Where Should Keywords Be Used?

Ideally, you should take some time out initially to build your keyword list. There are some free online tools that you can use to help you. Based on this list, you should set up your site structure, article marketing structure and your blog to make sure that your campaign is governed by the right keyword foundation. Even the pages that you bookmark should be tagged with these keywords in mind to elevate your account in the bookmarking sites as an authority on those keywords. Also, when you are linking to your website from other places, such as forums, groups, walls and micro blogs; make sure you use the link text keyword of the page title. Over time this will elevate your content network high into the search engines for all your words of choice…

I'm with Linda and Bobbi. I had no idea about the bookmarking/authority connection, and still don't understand that completely.I think it would be more of what I'm interested in...Hmmm...another perspective!

Once again, keywords are king, and are a way of branding who you are and what your niche is. Great to always remember, because keywords will haunt you when you go to YouTube and write your articles and blogs!

A lot of key info in this short post on where keywords should be used? Immediately I grabbed onto the point of site structure, article marketing and the blog should be coordinated in my campaign with the same keywords right from the beginning of the campaign. shows how important the tools are to get the right keywords as your whole campaign is really structured around them.

I hadn't realized about bookmarking pages with those same keywords to establish authority. Having us make sure we are using the link text keyword of the page title is great to know when inn forums! Thanks Simon! Powerful tips!
  • I remember WAY back when, when I was writing software documentation for mini-computers (and no they were NOT small!), that coming up with a valid Index of words was always the real key. Really good documenters will think of the words that their readers will use, versus just what they want to call their particular invention/feature. Keywords are really very similar to that concept. So instead of worrying about my product name (e.g. Executive Girlfriends' Group), I should be thinking "women's network". Time to go put together a new list!
  • Wow Reading all the comments from so many experienced online marketers really underlines for me the value of Simon's book. Every single person here comes out with new nuggets at each reading. Starting with the basics and building a strategy seems to be the way to go.It is interesting to see that Simon also states that keywords should be used whenever possible in all content and when pointing to that content so that your name will be associated with it over time. That in itself seems to be one of the MASTER KEYS.
As Karin says..making a map of the process at the outset is probably the best way to keep things straight and clear.
  • Rebecca, you are absolutely right. Social proof comes from people with this kind of expertise and experience that can take the teaching of someone who has indeed cracked the code on keyword strategies. I love how practical this all is. What we were able to achieve with keywords in our YouTube strategy for Word of Mouth Media is a great example. We set out to own that term and in just a few days, we had it and no one has knocked us off the top of that ladder. It was all about a multi-media strategy, not just one platform.
  • Start at the beginning - Keywords is undoubtedly that place. Simon's book gives us a very clear structure for marketting online and his authenticity makes me believe him when he highlights the value of getting the key words reseach down.
  • For many people, keywords are an afterthought versus a strategy. Simon is right on in this article about how to plan using keywords as an integral part of the execution. I know that in the past, I haven't been diligent about the use of keywords, or more importantly haven't thought about the words that consumers would really be using when searching for the idea or concept that I was writing about.
  • This has really become a place for me of deep thought as well as really practical application. Here we are talking a Key words and their indisputable relevance. I am working with the results received from Marcus and trying different combinations. While, outside the box, after listening to Nokia's futurist discussing the world in 2015 and reading the Google book at the moment - I cant help wondering how in the same way as Social rank is in the process of taking over from Page Rank, whether some "Social" or "Emotional" aspect will take over from Key Words. Interesting Hey?

One thing I have come to learn in Following Simon Ford, is, he always goes back to basics! Start at the beginning. Follow the system. Dont take short cuts. Key Words are the starting point. Everything one does should be done with Key Words in mind. If you' stick to the rules religiously, success is around the corner.

Thanks Simon for stretching my mind with keywords beyond just one area. To tie in keywords in site structure, article marketing besides blogs and bookmarking sites. I now know to use with You Tube videos also! To plan ahead with overall strategy for keywords to be used in forums and groups with a long tail plan makes great sense.

Thanks for these and other tips in your book "Social Traffic"!

Keyword research is an important part of a good foundation. Time researching the right keywords and finding out how many times each keyword is queried by google users. If it's a highly competitive keyword then you might need to modify the keyword so that its not so competative. ie golf vs golf shoes. "golf shoes" is less competative than "golf" so higher chance of getting google users to find your site.
  • In my mind keywords and content syndication are competing for the most important aspects of any online presence.
Keywords are important and will need to be used where possible. They tell Google, YouTube and many others what the topic of your content is. Keywords will help you categorize the content, and make it easier for people with like minded interests to find each other.
Content syndication is important because everybody wants to syndicate, however it is not easy to set things up in such a way, that there will be no duplicates. The best way to handle content syndication is to map the process. This way you will know ahead of time if you have duplicates show up in your feed system.

  • Awesome information that I'd never have known any other way. Frankly I never even gave thought to the keywords in the sites I bookmark. This an entirely new concept to me knowing now that this will elevate my account in the bookmarking sites as an authority on those keywords. I really need to go back from the first step and investigate all the keywords.
  • Keywords are one of the most important steps in creating an online presence. If you have a well researched plan before even putting finger to keyboard, lots of headaches can be saved.

A over-simplified example.... would you start selling cars or automobiles?
