The girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes

When we were younger, how much did we care to know about environmental issues? How much time did we spend to understand the people around us? How much did we fight for global issues? How well-versed were we of policies that effect the world at large. I’d dare say… very incredibly little.

Whether the times were easier, or the connectedness was limited, or the situation was less of a threat - nothing justifies closing our eyes and our ears to things that are real, close and extremely daunting.

Unless you’ve been hibernating in a cave for the past 20 years or so, you’d know that things are different today. Our kids are smarter about these global issues. We have better platforms for taking action.

Here’s a video to shake your conscience up. The girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes.

It’s Earth day 2009! If our generation doesn’t act now, our kids, kids may not have a choice - Act Now, Click Here

  • I know when I was younger I devoted zero time to environmental issues. I wasn't taught to care anything at all about them either. But hey I am from Texas and we aren't oil-producing state.

She is very savvy comparing these issues with the stock market or losing points in an election. Very moving and unfortunately very real because of the air pollution and sun damage we get because of damage we've done to the ozone layer. I definitely want to see the great barrier reef and the glaciers in the Arctic before they melt.

Was this girl 11 Chicke? She looks older than that to me.
  • Wow, I can only hope that my 11 year old is as courageous as this little girl was in addressing the UN about the environment. I know that I am not nearly as passionate myself about the environment as I should be and hearing this little girl talk about God's creation and what has happened to it in the course of her short life?
  • Anthony
i highly doubt this speech was written by her. I also think this girl grew up to be an ultra liberal paranoid tree hugger. She's afraid to out in the sun??? What a weirdo.
  • A moving call-to-action speech from this young girl. How can we ignore that our children's lives are at stake? How sad to think that every generation experiences less happiness, plays less in the fresh air, worries about toxins, and sees less wildlife than previous generations. This girl silenced a room, but hopefully, her passion will spur all of us to take action.

Even though we may know the environmental problems, we're not doing enough to help. Her eloquence lingers in my heart.

    Best,
