Commenting & Linking

You’d be surprised at how many relationships start off online that begin merely by commenting on each other’s blog posts or articles of work. Comments are a great ice-breaker and conversation starter and are one of the best ways of approaching people. Be sure to know that when you leave comments on popular blogs you may or may not get the same kind of response back as you would on smaller blogs. This is simply because popular bloggers get a lot of comments and consequently have less time to filter through and answer every one of them.

Sending links off to other bloggers in your blog posts or articles is also an appreciated gesture when done in moderation. There is software that you can use for finding relevant blog posts by keywords that will automatically post quotes on your blog with track back links to the original article in a topic specific manner…

  • Jonathan, your comment is so true. I know this now, but I never realized it until Simon demonstrated it to all of us. A lot of people remain anonymous while surfing the web. They do not realize that by not participating in the discussion they miss out on a lot. I hope to be able to convince others to participate in the dialogue, and start the conversation where needed.
Just think of this: would you expect to be a successful sales person if you never said a word to any customer that walks into your store? Of course not. So why would it be any different online....

hi Simon..this is a really great way to build relationships...it's almost like commenting favourably on someone's child...that parent likes you already! Another thing I have found from commenting on people's blogs is that it's surprising how many bloggers will acknowledge it. Great information about the Trackboost software as well..must go and check that out...
  • I think people underestimate the power of commenting. The easiest way to be recognized as a thought leader is to leave an insightful comment on your favorite bloggers post.

The reason this is so powerful is because:
    1. You have an opinion and are not afraid to share it.
    2. You have read the post and you're not afraid to comment.
    3. It shows appreciation for the work they've put into the post.

Two of the highest compliments you can pay any blogger is a comment and a link...this shows them that you really care.
