Selecting a cause to donate funds to

Social Traffic Earth Day Birthday Campaign:

For over two months now, the social traffic evangelists have been promoting the EarthDay Birthday events. A lot of people raised their hands to say that they will save $10 from their lives to donate to a global cause this Earth Day. Many of them even made videos for Youtube to tell the world how they are saving money in such economic times – it’s a small amount, but it is something – some were sacrificing junk food, haircuts, drinks, others were saving on trips and gas refills. It was interesting to see how people who are motivated act. There always needs to be a cause behind it – something greater than themselves. Without a cause even seemingly good deeds are difficult to do.

We made a group on Facebook that has the names of the donators and the names of the people they refer to next to them. It’s a growing list that is evolving as people add their lists of 10 to it. I mentioned our intentions from this campaign in the previous post. It’s just so powerful to have 10 people who have influence of 10 friends each. This seemingly small divide (2 degrees of separation) results in a group of 100 in the blink of an eye. Next of each of those 100 people have influence on 10 friends as well, then we have a group of 1000. Now if we just go down to 5 levels of separation which is NOT AT ALL impossible, we’d have a group of 100,000 people. Ask each of these 100,000 people to donate just $10 to a cause that they select, and we’d have 1 million dollars worth of donations. Imagine how powerful this model is. Imagine how powerful Social Traffic Inc can get if it could demonstrate this simple theory in real life. It is important for all of you to understand this concept completely in order to become a part of it. The difference between 100 committed Social Traffic members donating $10 this Earth day and 100 Social Traffic members having a network of 10 people who not only donate 10 dollars, but who have also built a network of ten people who will do the same each year $999,999.00. Please, we have two days to run this year. Now is as good a time as any. Start working on building your network of ten people. If not for this year. For next.

Donation option:

It’s time to select a cause to donate to. When we see all of this activity it becomes even more important to select a cause which everyone unanimously votes for. I’ll talk about one donation idea today, you can leave more ideas in the comments.

Instead of blindly donating to a charity organization, why don’t we all pitch in for something much bigger and tangible. Why don’t we find an organization which is so passionate about its cause that we would have no shred of doubt about our money going in the rights hands.

I keep thinking about ideas, but somehow I keep coming back to the thought of being able to buy deforested rain forests and allow someone to give it life again. It serves so many purposes from wild life preservation, atmospheric temperature control, maintenance of environmental balance, all the way to adjusted carbon levels.

Not only that, but it’s a firm statement against brute consumerism, it’s a stand against destroying natural balances, it’s a stand against global oppression for personal benefits. Why do we need to deforest masses of land anyway? So that we can eat, consume, wear a little more? So that we can continue consuming products which we don’t even need, as if there is nothing wrong with it.

One organization that stands apart from a lot of other ones is the Willie Smits foundation.

Here’s what Ode Magazine has to say about him:

“Willie Smits’s accomplishment is the perfect example of finding a best-of-all-worlds solution. Smits did not “merely” create a rainforest in a barren, fire-prone plot of land. He has also involved local people and created 3,000 jobs. He gave people a rainforest and economic incentives to preserve the forest. His meticulously engineered and implemented plan refused to make trade off between his passion for conservation the need of locals for a sustainable lifestyle.”

His motivation to save rainforests began with the plight of the orangutans. According to TED:

“Smits believes that to rebuild orangutan populations, we must first rebuild their forest habitat which means helping local people find options other than the short-term fix of harvesting forests to survive. His Masarang Foundation raises money and awareness to restore habitat forests around the world and to empower local people. In 2007, Masarang opened a palm-sugar factory that uses thermal energy to turn sugar palms (fast-growing trees that thrive in degraded soils) into sugar and even ethanol, returning cash and power to the community and, with luck, starting the cycle toward a better future for people, trees and orangs.”

Lastly, here’s an official appeal from Dr. Willie Smits - Sponsors Needed.

Recommending a charity or foundation of your choice:

For those of you promoting Earth Day Birthday, we can also choose from any other event that you have created a page for on Eventslisted.com. This is your chance to make a difference for a cause that you feel will benefit those involved - if you have other ideas for where the donation should go, we’re all ears. Please make your recommendations today. Present your case in the comments. Right now, this is completely your prerogative - I only ask that it should be unanimously agreed so that everyone is comfortable with where their money goes.

Recommend a charity of your preference and include the charities PayPal ID - so that we can create a page for it. If you are recommending a new cause, please qualify the charity to ensure its is genuine using http://www.charitynavigator.org.

How it works:

Of all the charity recommendations that you add to comments, the charities that are mentioned with their charitynavigator.com rating + PayPal email address will be added to the Social Traffic Earth day donation page on our website.

We will add widgets on the STi blog. You will be asked to send your 10 people to a page on the Social Traffic blog this April 22nd. It will have a few of these widgets for people to donate directly into the charity’s PayPal accounts to make the process completely seamless.

It’s Earth day 2009! If our generation doesn’t act now, our kids, kids may not have a choice - Act Now, Click Here

  • Thank you for recommending Borneo Orangutan Survival UK to receive your Earth Day pledges. Having known Willie Smits for over 10 years and being involved with BOS (I am the founder of BOS UK), I can assure you that donations to this organisation result in meaningful solutions for wildlife and the planet.
Can I just point out that there are partners to BOS in many countries around the world, to whom you can also donate. You can find links to these partners at www.savetheorangutan.org. For those in the USA, please visit Orangutan Outreach at www.redapes.org.

    I donated my $10.00 to http://plantabillion.org

I really like their mission to plant a billion trees and they only need one dollar for each tree. Many don't realize just how vital the forests, jungles, and rainforests are to the planet, so I feel good about where I gave my $10.

    Happy Earth Day all!! :)

Hi, I have just made a donation of €20 to Rainforest Alliance. I had already chosen that charity and e-mailed my list about it before this posting came out.I know they are not on the list... I will also make a donation to the Willie Smits Foundation as it looks like a really great charity as well. anne agw.edbd

I would like to support any attempt to recreate some of the habitat that has been destroyed, so will be quite happy to pass my $10 onto Willie's foundation. Look forward to seeing if one charity emerges as the overall favourite of the majority. I am also learning a lot from following various links from the social traffic sites, never knew how terrible bottled water was for the environment!! I have bought my last bottle.

They're all good. Love what Willie Smits is doing.
I like http://www.plant-a-tree-today.org/ becuase it involves education of the women and children...and education always means empowerment and thinking on one's own.

http://www.plantabillion.org This looks good too, just as long as we are aware and donating somewhere.
  • I'd like to offer the name of the EarthDay Network. You can read more about them at their site: http://ww2.earthday.net/. They have a 4-star listing at CharityNavigator.org (don't know why it's not 5-star). Nonetheless, they have several ON-GOING programs of merit. Re: PayPal -- Those who have a PayPal account can simply download PayPal's add-on that allows the auto-generation of a valid credit card (that'll be linked to the owner's PayPal account). This is PayPal's workaround for vendors/organizations NOT equipped or ready to take direct PayPal transactions.

If, however, things come down to a vote and PlantAMillion wins, I will also gladly go along with the majority vote and contribute my $10 to Dr. Smit and his efforts.

So many great organizations out there. Here is one more to take a look at http://www.seashepherd.org/ Regardless of which one we choose, we will still be making a difference and giving Mother Earth a beautiful gift.
  • There are so many to choose from, I may need to end up choosing TWO (smile).

  • Seems like a very good cause, the video I watched on this was informative and the more Rainforests we have the more oxygen we have eating up carbon. How about those cuties.

Wow-- What a great article Simon. Dr. Willie Smit's work Is very impressive and an excellent example of focused human ingenuity. Creating new jobs and revenue while preserving and renewing the environment is so important . I'll be donating to his program.
    Thanks

I think this cause sounds like a great use of my $10 for Earth Day.
  • I believe that there are so many worthy causes out there that as long as we at some point review our choice and possibly change I am fine with whatever the group wants. How can we go wrong with any cause. A cause a year or every six months would work.
  • All are great options. Still undecided! I will probably make donation to a few of them...
  • duncan_b
Seems like we are fortunate to have many choices, any one of which would be highly deserving for their good work. If it's to be one gift (a concept which makes sense to me) then my support is for Willy Smits.
  • Did not have enough time to work on Earth Day as I joined Simon's quest very late in the game and missed out on the early discussions to really be part of this great idea.
  • I'm with Doug, I think http://www.plantabillion.org/ is the way to go.
  • IN talking with the leadership and some others within Social Traffic the rainforest is a great cause to donate to and where I plan to put my $10 donation.
  • My 10 $ goes to http://www.plant-a-tree-today.org/ - PATT is doing incredible projects in Thailand focussed on tree planting with social benefits and in particular empowerment of woman and raising of eco awareness for youngsters. Eco and social benefits combined! Matthias
  • Just corrected my earlier post, and sent my $10 off to buy trees @ http://www.plantabillion.org/ (Sorry, I couldn't wait until Earth Day's Birthday, but I'll be away.) Kari kgl, edbd

  • Debi
Great choice! I will be sending my $10 to the Willi Smits Foundation.

  • This sounds like a great cause to me Simon and one close to your heart after your time with the gorillas. Involving the locals is always important .When building a lodge in PNG many years ago we employed all the locals on rotation so everyone felt involved in the project and got some benefit .. retaining many as river guides. We transported all the children from the island tribes to the mission school daily as part of the project . Through this depth of involvement and negotiation between PNG governement and the tribal elders we prevented logging to within 300m of any river, saving both our venture and the life blood of the tribes who previously had no voice that was heard. My vote is with Willie Smits foundation and more than happy to recommend it to others.
  • eddierog
My choice is http://www.savetheorangutan.co.uk for the Borneo survival foundation.
They do an amazing job caring for these endangered orangutans, and every dollar
would help this wonderful species to thrive in their habitat and increase numbers.
  • michaelqtodd
Once we have decided lets go back to the people we have nominated and seek their donation and ask them again to do the same for ten others.Lets decide soon while Earth Day is in everybody's minds
  • michaelqtodd
I also vote for Willie Smits
  • I not only love the way Willy's program combines benifits for new forest, jobs and people, along with the habitat for arrangatangs but he also doing this did so much more like the climit change for local areas, and I feel one of the best parts is the formula created that can be used again and again and again over and over again for future success all over.

I am completely confortable and supportive of this charity for my donation and even future donations I choose to give.

  • DebbieZachry
I agree with you Shane about Will's program that combines some many benefits, new forest, jobs, climate change.... and yes most of all the formula to re-create that process over and over again. Definitely something our world needs to take action on. A good system that works well to help preserve many areas of our environment. So.. my vote also goes to Willie Smits.

I had no one organization in mind when we started on this journey so I like what I have read bout the Willie Smits foundation. I really like knowing that someone is doing all they can to bring back the areas that have been affected. We need as much of those areas as possible to become productive producers of all the important things we need to help overcome the damage we have done to our planet.
  • A few weeks ago I interviewed a group of teens that had raised money for the International Medical Corps. www.imcworldwide.org/ I also interviewed the Country Director who administered the donation to the Children of Gaza. They rank well in the charitynavigator.com site and I was impressed with the individuals that I dealt with for the radio show.

I believe saving our earth must begin by saving the people who inhabit it.

The Willie Smits Foundation will be getting my $10 on Earth Day.
  • The Willie Smits Foundation is awesome. Let's band together and focus a choice charity like Willie Smits.
  • I love what Willie Smits has been doing. I would be happy to direct my friends towards his cause, I like the idea of making a large impact with a combined donation.
My other 2 favorites have been:

  • Hi Simon, Why are you very US centric in this approach? I see only US based charity organizations, i want to talk to you about promoting charities in developing countries where there is a dire need for help, without which these people will become social evils. Take look at the file attached with my thought process. Hope to talk to you soon.
    Cheers Anil Rao
  • Does not seem to be US centric. Let's face polluters - US x AU
  • Mi choice is the http://www.amazonteam.org
The organization accepts donation with credit card.
    No PayPal Option or Id.
  • This is such a beautiful clear and concise description of how one person acting can make an amazing impact on the world- the 10 who tell 10 and the work Dr. Willie Smits as well. I am committing my $10+ to this charity.

  • I'm so impressed with the Willie Smits Foundation and their efforts in rebuilding a rainforest. Thank you for explaining how everyone can spread the word and get involved. I'd like my donation to go to this charity.
