Rich Media: Videos

What if I told you that by adding one more element to your marketing efforts, you can potentially;

* Increase your traffic by at least 20%

* Increase your search engine rankings significantly

* Increase your outreach and visibility significantly

* Increase your brand value significantly

* Make your customer interactions much more direct and personal

What would you say? That special something has a tested ROI of at least 150%.

Whenever we’re working, researching or doing just about anything, we turn to Google. It’s ironic how much we use it. It’s almost like our lifeline. Now imagine this: the size of Youtube (the granddaddy of video sharing sites) in terms of daily page views is double that of Google. Can you believe that?

The numbers of viewers and regular users of videos online are massive to say the least. This crowd is averaging an age of 30 years and has people from all age, gender and location demographics. Half of the videos are watched on video sharing sites, and the other half are watched on other people’s blogs and websites.

I want this to be an important part of every marketing campaign that I see. You have to leverage the power of videos for your launch and see how it amplifies your sales. Depending on how well you execute it, you should be able to see measurable increases in your bottom-line. This is a very powerful medium of communication so use it well. Some pointers:

1- The key here is to produce good quality videos. Videos that have powerful social and emotional triggers that may cost nothing to shoot. I also find that sound has a far greater impact that visuals so if something needs to be compromised it should be the video but spend your money on an amazing sound track and it will often carry average videos well. Make sure it’s something others would want to share with their friends. Make sure it is interesting enough to make them want to watch through it. It shouldn’t be too long. Make it short and crisp. Keep the file size to a maximum of 100 MB. There are countless great videos that you can watch online to get inspired by. Do check out Mike Wesch’s “Machine is Using Us” video; and also, if you get a chance, try to analyze what makes the “free hugs” videos so viral. (You can search for them on Youtube)…

  • I just took a quick tubemogul.com and it has made some huge improvements since I looked at it about six months ago. I have done the traffic geyser $1 trial and found it to be a very useful service as you outlined Simon in your other blog post dedicated to it.

But on the upside tubemogul.com only had about six services it distributed to when I looked at it those many months ago. Now it offers 25 services and many of those overlap with what traffic geyser does only tubemogul.com is free. Of course it doesn't have the social bookmarking or podcasting features but you'll have to decide whether you use those or not.

    Bob,

You make an excellent point about how powerful video is because it allows you to get 100% of the communication since you see the body language and hear the vocal tone and inflection. Text can never be this powerful. And you point out the fact to demonstrate how powerful video is that YouTube gets way more searches and page views than daddy Google does. I've even heard that YouTube is the world's number one search engine and not Google.

Will we soon see the day where SEO guys tout their ability to get you a number one ranking in YouTube instead of focusing on getting a number one ranking in Google?

Leverage the power of video can pay off for any campaign. The audience can truly feel like they are there in person and relate to the emotion versus reading the words off a paper. Powerful and demonstrated by twice the daily page views on YouTube versus Google.

The search engine spiders give more weight to a video on your web site.Your point is well taken Simon about making more How To videos to drive traffic to our websites. Thanks for great info in book Social Traffic too!
  • Video is Huge. Twice as many searches per day as the Big Daddy Google. Simon Ford the Social Media Guru says Video is an integral component to any campaign. Whether its about releasing a new product, doing sales training or simply conveying a message - Video is one of the most effective means of getting the message across.

Videos will increase your traffic, increase your search engine rankings, visibility, and brand value. Besides this Video has a measurable and tested ROI.

The challenge for many is to get around the self-consciousness one has to beat when one first starts. What is important, is to make a start, it gets easier every time.

I wish I had read this post earlier, because there are lots of good takeaways. One is shortness and sound - instead of the long, intense drone. Another is to use a video wherever a brief explanation or clarification may be required - the more the better.

One thing (a very small point) I'm not sure I agree with is to have videos set to autoplay - my personal preference is to be given the choice to run a video when I land on a page.

I just scanned the comments and really agree with Addy's point that when given a choice to read a length pdf or watch its video (or listen to a podcast), I most often opt first for the pdf version simply to save time. If I like what I read, I will often go back for the rich media version -otherwise. Guess this ties in with the wisdom of 'short' videos.
  • The great thing about offering all kinds of formats is that you will be able to cater to all kinds of people and all kinds of circumstances.

Sometimes, I prefer the pdf file and I simply skim through it, sometimes I prefer the video, because I feel that I need to see it to fully grasp it. And when a pdf is providing good quality (such as in "Social Traffic"), I appreciate the audio version, so that I can listen to the content while driving. Great use of time!

As far as short videos are concerned, I would agree more with "to the point" videos. Sometimes it simply takes a while to explain a process or procedure. In that case I don't mind a long video. However, as discussed above, if the video is so long that you start losing the attention of the viewer, than it is a different story of course.
  • Karenn you make an excellent point and this is something Frank Kern strongly suggest in teaches in his training materials. There are three different modalities you have access to online which are audio, video, and text. And you want to use all of these to reach each different type of person who prefers to consume information in one of these formats.

A big key with sales copy as you and Duncan pointed out is staying on point. As long as you're telling an interesting story your audience likes they'll stay with you almost indefinitely. The moment you get boring is the moment they leave especially online.
  • duncan_b
I think your point regarding 'to the point' videos is spot on. Maybe it's like good sales copy - which isn't too long so long as it's telling the story. But if it gets boring, it's too long, even if short!
  • You may laugh, but I had to come back today and re-read this information, I have searched for 2 days trying to remember where I read it. Which part I should say as I knew it was here. I told you you would laugh. Absent minded today. Well Love those tips, hence why I come back today and got the website again, yes forgot that to.

Thanks Simon for great blog post on adding videos to our marketing campaigns! The stats support everything you say so appreciate the insight and the tips. It blew me away on what you said about YouTube having more daily page views than Gooogle ! Can see we should add videos to blogs and sites.

Great tips on producing the video and what to do with it! Appreciate the insight that the how to videos are growing the fastest! Thanks for the info here and in your great book "Social Traffic"!
  • That's an impressive ROI I hadn't previously seen put into numbers. 150% ROI is massive.

Video is the most powerful online element and the closest thing to face-to-face communication so should be part of any marketing campaign.

Another good point about the quality of audio. Audio makes a huge difference and should be emphasized.

Youtube is the world's 2nd largest search engine. Having twice the page views of Google is a real eye opener.

The tip about redirecting a domain for tracking purposes is well worthwhile.

It is rich media. A drawback I saw was the inability of search engines that are totally text-based to determine content and relevancy to handle videos, audios and images (because they don't have text to search on. I hear technology is advancing so that will be attainable very soon. Wow.

I KNOW how powerful videos are and how viral they can get. I have to caution that it is not appropriate for everything.

I say that because I've found myself steering away from videos when there is a choice of a text offering. When the presentation is about facts and numbers, and instructions I prefer text, unless graphics or demonstrations are necessary to economize on words. I find myself impatient with glitz, longwindedness, irrelevant material, inaudible speech.

With a piece of text I can easily scan for the nuggets, versus sitting through a session WITHOUT KNOWING whether there are nuggets or not. And if I want to go back to retrieve the nugget I have to sit through the entire thing again...... Time is definitely my limiting factor (besides patience!)

Anyone feel the same way? Or am I all by myself? lol
  • Hi Simon,
That's really a great info that really work. Sadly, in Brazil, (yet) not enough customers to interact. TubeMogul is really great! Thanks
  • I love videos and seeing what people are doing with them. This is good info especially the different ways one can set them up on different sites with auto play or not.The youtube platform itself is adding more social features to it all the time.
Even though making videos can be intimidating at first I very much am looking forward to developing this format of info sharing.
  • Two things,
    1. Thanks for the heads up on tip #7 for syndicating our videos to multiple sites, I'm going to try this on my next video.

    2. When I hit the "retweet" button it took me to the wrong article: "What the world gave us..."

Other than that I have to say that I really enjoy working with video. It's a great way to express yourself as well as connect with people on a deeper level.

PS-Thanks for the heads up on the "Machine is using us" video, pretty cool.
  • I had a prob. With RT button on another post before doing similar thing

I never payed attention to the video power/importance but during the last few weeks i realized how powerful it is, during the workshop we're doing together. Simon will the course include some, at least , basic practice or advices of which software to use for editing videos or recording screen shots/actions etc". ? Thanks
  • Windows movie maker is a good place to start and it should already be installed on your computer Avi.
  • Guest
    Ok, Ill try it thanks.
  • HI Simon,

Your number 7, does that mean if I upload there it will be shareable on youtube and places like veoh? Or do I have to upload again? I was not certain by your post can you assist please?
  • addytseng
No, you load once and Tubemogul sends your video to multiple sites. You get to choose which ones. I think Veoh may be one of them but I don't remember. I've used their free version before. They may have a paid version too. I haven't been keeping up. Traffic Geyser is another service.

To do that you have to first set up accounts at all the video sharing sites. Then of course you have to give TubeMogul or Trafric Geyser passwords to those accounts so they can upload videos for you.

It does save you a LOT of time! :-)
  • I've used bot TrafficGeyser and TubeMogul. Traffic Geyser really pushes some spammy practices and will get your accounts banned if you aren't careful. But TubeMogul works with the sites and will make you get approval from their editors before they allow you to submit to several of the sites.

TubeMogul's paid version mostly provides more tracking tools.

    Doug
  • Thankyou Addy, thats a great answer for me, I am delighted to get started and use the service especially to ease use. I am wondering if it would reduce my upload time too, that would be an added bonus. Thank you, you rock.
  • cher
This was great info Simon, thanx. It makes alot of sense.
  • Excellent information. I've had a Youtube account for years but hadn't been using it for business. I'd been thinking about making a how-to movie and putting it onto my blog ... I now have even more reasons to follow through with this idea. Thanks, Simon
  • You sure do kari...these would be great insights into the artist's life.
  • I made a video where I talked about my work at the Boston craft fair, but the exposure was bad, will have to try again!
  • Simon, great suggestions. All too often we overlook video as a way to get our message across. As a matter of fact your article, though the content is not new to me, has made me rethink what I am planning on doing for our ST campaign. I am realizing that especially when it comes to communicating personal experiences, video is the way to go. It is so much easier to show passion in video.....
