Tagging Photos

In Events Listed and Facebook if you tag photos with people’s names the photos appear in their profile pages. This is a powerful marketing strategy. You can have staff post photos and tag them all with your attendee’s names so the photos are fed into their profile pages where they are seen by each tagged person’s friend’s network. This strategy is applied to Events Listed event pages so that each event page can become a collection of photos and videos and content for the event.

I personally don’t use business cards. If I am at a physical event meeting new people who I want to connect with, I have a photo taken of us together that I load into my photo sharing platform. I connect to the person of interest in my social networking site and pull the photo in to tag them to it…

I agree: it is a good idea, however, to be true: I know quite a lot of peoplea) who are not (yet) in social networks b) if they are they do not want to be tagged due to e. g. reasons of privacy. Do you inform people about being tagged in advance? Maybe it is a European issue I refer to?
  • that's actually a fantastic strategy
  • while I'm all for sharing information, I do not want to have my picture taken over and over again with complete strangers. Nor do I want my photo tagged in lots of places. it's not a matter of privacy so much as image protection. I am not a celebrity and I want to protect myself, when I can, from the spammers etc. Just thought I'd share a different view.

  • Sending a tagged photo... it's as nice as sending flowers and better than any business card that will tossed in a drawer later and not associated with you later on. Of course, for the picture to make it to them someone needs to give me a business card or I write down their e-contact info. This is a great idea, and one I can honestly say I'd never have thought of on my own. Thanks for this bonus idea!
  • Doug,

I always love to hear stories from the real-world of people who are successfully using these strategies. I know tagging photos in places like Facebook, myspace, Flickr, and photobucket can be huge traffic generators. And twitpic can be another big traffic generator.

    Steve,

You make a good point about tagging people in photos. The more you can get your face and likeness in front of other people the more familiar they will get with you. And the more familiar they are with you the more they will like you and feel comfortable trusting you. And as we have learned trust is the big key to making more sales and money in any business off-line or online.
  • Tagging photos is another way of showing friends that you have an interest in them and that you care. When you tag them and the phot shows on their pages - people develop more of an affinity towards you by seeing that you care..

An idea that I liked in particular was taking pics at an event then tagging these and sending them out as business cards. Clear article again by Simon U Ford..
  • Tagging people in photos works really well. I have a client who's a photographer and she gets lots of traffic from friends of clients that she tags in photos.

I will be implementing this strategy on some events I have coming up.

  • I never realised how much Facebook come alive until I learnt this technique. Its a great way to share interactively and get involved with peopel around you on the internet specifically Facebook. I have to admit there are many techniques I have learnt in facebook, it creates such a wonderful environment there that I never knew could happen.
  • This is a great strategy which operates similar to Facebook so if you're familiar with it there it'll be a breeze here.

As always don't spam contacts with stuff their uninterested in or they'll block/unfriend you. Powerful when used expertly, deadly when used spammily.

Also, that's an excellent golden nugget about taking a photo with people you meet at an event and then having an online follow up with them by tagging them. I'd also suggest getting their business card so you can control following up with them and give them a quick call to let them know you've uploaded their photo. Always good to have many ways to contact people.
  • Using photos is a greatly underutilized strategy. That much I knew. That your photos can end up on peoples profile pages, simple by tagging the photo with their name I had no idea was possible. What a great way to increase the visibility of your event!

What is not mentioned in this article, but what is also a very powerful strategy for tagged pictures is to submit those pictures to Flickr and other social media sites that list pictures. This creates more back links and more ways for people to find you.

Another advantage of using pictures is that the competition is not nearly as fierce as it is with written content and/or videos. You will be found much easier.

Taking a photo with someone you just met is a great idea.
It works only if the person is (1) willing to have her mug shot taken, AND posted on the web, (2) only if she is also on networking site I post the photo on - no point if she doesn't get to see it at all.

Frankly, I would agree to have my pic taken with someone I just met if I think I want further association with the person. Without the trust I would not do it. Who know what that person is going to do with it.

Taking and posting photos is great at an event where everyone is having fun and want to be reminded with photos.

This is a great concept - tagging photos as a further potential source of viral traffic on Facebook or here at EventsListed. Do the photos have to be tagged by the "subject's" Facbook username? I suppose so, which is another reason to use one's real name as a username on each social media site.

Great idea Simon about taking pictures at events with people and then tagging them and posting in your social networking site to get to your profile. Awesome! As you say better than a business card. People love recognition and the opportunity to see their pictures at FB or any other site! Great way to connect and start developing a relationship with them too.

Personally I hadn't thought about using photos as part of marketing so this was great article! Many more tips for people who want to learn Social Media in your insightful book "Social Traffic"!
    Thanks Simon!
