In today’s rapidly evolving world, emphasis is being paid to making everything available online – from music videos to old newspapers to recordings of various events; everything is going digital. Another addition in this sphere is that of live webcasts. Live webcasts provide you the opportunity of broadcasting your item over the internet to a multitude of users simultaneously. Keeping in view the phenomenon of global village, your webcast would virtually be broad-casted to the entire world!

Live webcasts can be audio or video; you transmit them live but if you want to air them later on you can even do that by recording them beforehand; the mechanism being the same as it is in normal broadcasting. Live webcasts allow an interactive environment where your users can approach you through chat rooms, emails, live messaging or even live calls. All you need is a webcam and microphone with the setting of your choice.

There are different platforms that support webcasting; among them is ustream.tv and radioblogclub.com. All you have to do is register here and broadcast your event, let it be a talk show, a concert, a conference; anything at all. In addition to this, the choice of adding your live cast to your social network (e.g. Facebook) is also available. This integration of your webcast with popular social networking sites guarantees a larger viewership for your transmission….

Thanks for article and resources Simon on web-casts!Important point often overlooked
was how important web-casts can be used for feedback from the community about what they like,what are they looking for etc. The ability to interact live in a variety of formats from chat rooms to the live calls is what is exciting about the technology. Testing can be done quickly.

I've just recently started using webcasts in the form of Blog talk radio.

I'm only three shows in and I'm really starting to feel more connected with my audience. It's really great for keeping your finger on the pulse of things.

As you mentioned, one of the main advantages is the recordings.

After my show airs I'm able to download the recording and use it on my blog as a new post. This helps me keep fresh content coming into the blog.

Oh, I love that strategy Jonathan. It really came alive for me as you described it here. In the past I always thought of blogs as written information either in diary form or as a news update with information. Just think how fresh it can be to host a radio show with guest speakers as well as the listeners all stating their views. This keeps it so fresh you'd need to refrigerate it (grin).

Going digital is an interesting arms race and opens up lots of possibilities. I've used ustream and like it's possibilities because it's an online version of giving a public speech but instead of being limited to an audience of a few hundred or thousands you can reach the entire world where they are...the comfort of their own home.

Listening to the feedback gained is vital and I see many companies falling down on this point.

Web-casts are great for spicing your normal social media sites up more. Giving them more texture and flavor. A great way to deliver more of your personality to your audience - exactly what Social Media is all about.

Steve you're absolutely right. Having a webcast or webinar is a great way to get visual and audio communication with your audience. This deepens their connection with you and makes them trust you all that much more.

And as you mentioned this is what social media is all about... it's a virtual version of making friends and communicating one-on-one in a live and off-line personal environment.

NOt only does your audience get more of you with Webcasts - we get more of THEM! How useful and a concept never before so easily attainable. I forgot to mention what FUN it is to get feedback so instantly from the audience. If we keep an open mind to evolving ourselves and really listen to what our target market are telling us - we can't but succeed. Simon brings this home in his book on SM traffic. Great stuff

Web casts have certainly made my world smaller.The record/replay aspect of it is great.
Being able to hear and speak with people in real time with audio or visual goes a long way for anchoring the relationship

I have loved the work I've done with internet radio. Even though it doesn't have the same visual dimension of a webcast and the platform that I use doesn't presently allow the use of Powerpoint or other visuals, the best thing is the connection that you can get with your audience. With chat and live call in, it can truly be dialogue versus monologue.

I even found a way to monetize it with my clients, and am doing my first B2B private label radio show for NCL beginning in August. One of our topics will be social media, which should be interesting, as the audience will be over 1000 travel agents!

The social platforms also allow you to interact live with your online community. With a webcast you can integrate RSS and Twitter feeds or even Skype calls like Oprah does. All happening live, during your event.

Great way to get to the business at hand with less disruption of schedules. Biggest bonus it transcents time and space. It is a global economy now, and changes need to be made to gain the competitive edge.
