Twitter

According to a recent survey, the maximum percentage use (almost 30% of the people who use twitter), is to share links to items of interest. Imagine if YOU were the item of their interest. Yes YOU! Let’s suppose you’re about to launch your product and have rolled out an elaborate marketing campaign. Your launch has created a stir in the market and people are interested in knowing the progress. The interest makes them start to update each other using micro blogging tools, such as twitter, about whatever piece of news they can find about your launch. (“I think they’re going to launch a phone this time. Imagine that. They call it the iphone or something…”). The micro-blogging aspect of it significantly increases the hype curve. You can launch when the timing is perfect and people are most receptive.

Now, during the launch event, keep the excitements rolling. Don’t stop there. Use their third party tools like LiveTwitting to give live updates on the event. Have competitions over these platforms if you want.

Like I mentioned in the Social Bookmarking section above, a good ratio for link-baiting your own content (as opposed to blatant self-serving) is 1 to 10. You can try to engage specific people by adding the “@” sign before their twitter name (e.g. @SimonFord). If I follow you and you don’t follow me then you won’t see what I say at all. Even if I aim it “@you” directly. But I will see everything you type out. Now if I type ten messages @you (when you are not following me) you will get them all of a sudden in your archives whenever you do start to follow me. All of the people who are following me only see half the conversation because you are not following me. They see what I type to you but won’t see what you type back unless you are following me.

  • I LOVE Twitter. i have met the most amazing people here and it is very easy. Because of the 140 limit on info you get very quickly to the point and the person. This would never happen face to face. It is sort of bizarre. It is the the viral effect that has led me to some of the most interesting people here at that.
Because of its simplicity and newness there are a lot of the decision makers behind the accounts so one can rapidly come in contact with the CEOs of small big companies alike.
If you have something pertinent to them, you can get a response and quickly move to email or skype. This does ot happen in traditional office settings with office administrators and receptionists filtering access.
It would only make sens to paln out a strategy to boost your plan with the use of twitter.
  • I'm still thinking about *me* as the buzz. For a moment there I was transported to my dressing room with a big star on the front, and the makeup girl waiting by to powder my shiny nose. But I digress.
Frankly I didn't pay much attention originally to who was reading my direct messages and who was following who and whether they'd see the whole conversation. Now I understand at a higher level than before and I'm able to strategize more carefully. Twitter is such a powerful tool ... and so NOW and relevant... so the movers and shakers are keeping their finger on the Twitter-pulse.
  • I have noticed many of the tweets from people I'm following do have a link in them with a headline type of title to describe the link. This is very effective because when the headline catches my attention I'll definitely click the link to see what it is about.

I strive to capture this style of attention-getting headline whenever I am posting links through to my twitter followers. Twitter can have a great effect on building the hype and buzz machine for your event the way you have outlined. Also you bring up a good point about using @ messages. Do so carefully because if you don't your followers may get upset and feel like they're left out in the cold only getting 50% of the conversation.
  • I am one of those 30% who almost exclusively use twitter to share links.

Don't get me wrong I still use the bookmarking sites, but most of my audience is on twitter. I find that twitter is a great way to share good content as well as push traffic. Right now twitter is the #2 source of traffic to my blog.

Re: "The Hype Curve" tiwtter is a unique tool which can push your content virally. With a well planned campaign, a good hashtag, and a group of dedicated people you can get a solid buzz around your product instantly.

I can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve for the next Social Traffic launch.
  • It is very clear to me that I don't need spam and I don't want to be a spammer. Twitter allows us to be authentic in our message and our sales. Simon's abook on Social Traffic brings this message home to us all - and again he does it in a real way.
  • Before reading Simon's book i thought twitter was for bored teens - how wrong I was! Simon has really brought it home to me with his 1-7 ratio that this is about noticing what is happening around us - being clued in. Its like being on the inside of the in group! As Lisa Lomas says its a party with benefits. I like the social etiquette too and its a quick and painless way to market. Simon's book on Social Traffic elucidates this most accurately - I recommend it!

Micro blogging can give leverage during a launch. I so agree on your ratio as none of us need spam or self serving tweets all the time as we should be giving value to our community.

Great point about using Livetwitting and having live competitions to keep excitement going during launch and after. Thaks Simon for your great insight in your book "Social Traffic".
  • There are so many benefits of using Twitter. Besides the FREE marketing campaign, it is easy to use, fun to use and you can build great relationships! I learned a great deal more about Twitter after reading Simon Ford's book Social Traffic. Great strategy and online etiquette. The 1 to 10 ratio is good as people will deem you 'out for themselves' with all the self promotion marketing. Twitter is about building relationships and helping with products that have value to their fellow tweeters!
  • #Twitter has come to the top of Social Media for Microblogging. For me my attraction was the ease of using it. After reading Social Traffic, i realised their could be a plan, my 1-7 ratio really made me think more about what was happening around me on twitter than what I was doing. Realising the big picture was what i needed to see as until then just thought of it as a party. Now a party with benefits. There is more to twitter than meets the eye.
