Live Streaming And Micro-Blogging

Micro-blogs are mini posts or updates that can directly be sent to blogs. There are a number of services for micro-blogging, like Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce. Social networking sites like Plaxo, Facebook and MySpace also have micro-blogging features in them, called status updates.

Micro blogging appeals to people because it is immediate and because they can send the updates through portable mediums as well, thus making it more accessible. You can send messages as text, video or audio. You can also use cell-phones to send and receive updates.

For events, I would say, one of the most valuable things is how you can give live updates of your plans or of the events themselves as they unfold. So those people listening in from home will know just how remarkable the event is. If your updates are combined with Google Maps (maps.google.com), the experience will be even better. Takes me back to the time when we used to send videos, feedbacks, thoughts and thanks only a day after the event - once everything was well over. This was only a few years back. Now, it’s amazing how we can give minute by minute updates to people all across the globe. Even if our community isn’t present at the site of an event, our bond still grows because they know exactly what we’re up to. We once had an inauguration that we were twittering (using www.twitter.com) about on an hourly basis. After a while we started to receive messages from curious readers with questions like “has the ribbon been cut?”, “does anyone like the new painting additions?” etc.

I am currently in the middle of planning a massive reunion (global) event for a client. My role is to market multiple parties in different locations throughout the world over the same 24 hour period, early next year. Attendees are working holiday-makers and international students who all lived in Sydney Australia at some stage over a 10 year period. Each event will have its own event page on the Events Listed application that will stream micro blog posts down the page. These pages will be posted on big projector screens at each venue so attendees can read messages posted by their friends all over the world. Those who cannot attend a venue can sit at home on their computer and join the party…

Mico blogging is such a great tool to reach people immediately on what is going on at an event or in our lives. Twitter can be used in so many ways as your article pointed out. Really is effective way to lower advertising costs to reach out and deliver value and build relationships.

Great to know Pownce.com also had file sharing. With all the tools it makes so much sense in what you are saying to deliver value and not just updates that don't benefit the audience that is tuned in. Thanks for the great info and your awesome book Social Traffic!

Great Article on Micro-Blogging... If used correctly it is very valuable. How else can you provide Free traffic to your site, provided that you are adding Value to your followers. Added Value is always Key, to social marketing. I'm Sure you all have that one Friend that every time you talk to them you think (who cares or Get over it already) and you leave that conversation completely empty, Well that is exactly what you don't want to do to your Followers, have them leaving your site or tweets Completely Empty.
  • Simon Ford can always be relied on for a concise article. This is no exception. Dont under estimate the power of Micro Blogging. To many entrants to this environment dont take it seriously. Put in the effort, take the time and learn the ropes...
Its popularity is primarily around the fact that it can be used spontaniously and often can provide immediate gratification, something that many seek.

However, for proper business use, its important to ensure that you use the tool ONLY to create and deliver Value. All other puroses are strongly advised against. Thats if you're serious about your on-line business exposure.
  • I was a bit sad to see the demise of the pownce.com. But fortunately I still have the use of my twitter and jaiku accounts so it was only a minor loss. The ability to do live updates at various events has many different benefits. Let's say a realtor was doing an open house and showing the property to a potential buyer. They could do an update to the people they know are looking for a house from their appropriate account.

There's nothing like social proof to stoke the desires of others.
  • I never used to understand the value of micro blogging. I knew people are obsessed with twitter and the likes, but I never quite understood why. What is the value of keeping others aware of what I am doing?

I know better now. People on Twitter are very active and click through rates are fairly high. As a result, Twitter, and other micro-blogging platforms, are a great way to promote your brand. After all, you can reach a lot of people and the short messages can send very powerful statements.
  • I never knew one could file share with Pownce.com Simon's book is full of valuable straight forward tips like these. But what i really like is his honest account of how micro blogging can be intrusive. I have seen this and been tempted myself to be a 'perpetrator' but the book encourages restraint and credibility and it is paying off. Thanks to the Social Traffic book I am learning how to use these tools effectively rather than randomly
  • Many individual marketters are afraid of twitter and see it only as a forum for teeny boppers to follow Paris Hilton and the like. How wrong they are! Simon's book on Social TRaffic illustrates how we need to make the system work for us and microblogging is no different. If there is one way of distinguishing ourselves in the market place then this is it - letting our target market enjoy some fringe benefits like a traffic update has made all the diffence to what get's spoken about post an event - 'wasn't it cool how they told us about the traffic on the M12' Yeh. I loved how they told us they were running late' - these become conversation points and more importantly STATUS symbols for our target market. They want to be on the inside of whats hot and this one sure route to that bar - Social Traffic tells it like it is!
  • I agree with Halicea99 - Adding value is key when it comes to social traffic and Simons book on Social Traffic makes that point explicitly. When I read the part of using twitter and microblogging I had what I call the 30cm drop - from my head to my heart . I got the value of this at an emotional level not just a rational one and people out there will feel this too when they read the book - I recommend you take the time.
  • Tagging someone is a photo is very cool and it makes for great marketting too - who doesnt want to be noticed. Be careful and be kind when doing it and it is sure to have the social markettting impact Simon suggests it will. I have seen it for myself. This also works a wonder on fACEbook by the way.
  • Steve,

Quick update that pownce.com has been closed down for quite a while. They have since merged with six apart to offer their blogging tools and software.

You definitely have to do micro-blogging the right way because no one wants to hear about your cat dancing or your dog barking (unless you are an animal lover and tweeple are following you BECAUSE of that). Keep it on topic to what your followers are interested in and the reason they chose to follow you.

Your comment about the traffic updates and wrecks is well taken. As long as you are providing relevant and valuable information that your followers will appreciate you will earn points with them. And yes tagging the appropriate people in a photo on Facebook can be a very viral thing to do. I've seen this work many times myself and especially on some of Simon's photos that he's done this with.
  • It's funny because I used to hang out on Facebook (and years before than in email or BBS) and never thought of it as a blog of any sort. Then I started up with Simon Ford's training program and I started looking at things from a birds-eye view and then down to the finest granularity. Now I fully understand the concepts of blogging and micro-blogging. I find myself glued to my Blackberry even when walking along and friends are passing by trying to catch my eye. It truly is a lifestyle and it is here to stay.
  • I agree with Simon that Twitter can be misused and become intrusive. I think it is important to have 'adding value' as the underlying philosophy of Twitter participation in order to benefit fully from this and similar tools.
