Outsourcing

I’m sure most of you have heard of the four hour work-week. Is it really possible? Thanks to the “leveled playing field” and “following the sun work hours” it may be somewhat realistic. So you like to be in control and keep an eye on each and every tiny wheel that turns and keeps your business running smoothly. Instead of burning the candle at both ends and killing yourself, it is better if you get other people to do the job for you.

Outsourcing is really cool because you can get area experts with special skills and training to do a million things which take up your time and resources. It also gives you an outsider’s view about your business. It can be a bit scary at first as you might feel that you are letting other people in your own territory but remember it is you who holds the reins and these people are just providing you their services.

There are some really good outsourcing platforms out there. You can read my post on an analysis of different outsourcing sites here. I have personally used Elance.com to find most of my team - everyone from designers, writers to SEO experts. I make sure I meet with them over Skype regularly to keep a tap on the work. Having a solid plan for performance measurement and deliverables helps in managing the teams better.

We’ve outsourced much of our SEO and writing related work to different offsite teams. Once you get over your initial hesitation to outsource, it actually ends up becoming much easier to manage your time this way. Also, in this way we have dedicated people working on their areas of expertise. We mostly use Elance.com for finding providers. Outsourcing is a heaven-sent so do make your life easy with it…

  • The ability to systemize tasks then orchestrate them is what made the internet so attractive to me.

To tell you the truth, it was little bumpy at first, but once I got my VA trained the world was my oyster. Now I have time to dream, plan, and try new things to grow my business.

Your words couldn't be more appropriate Simon, "You don't get large, then outsource. You get large by outsourcing."

I wonder how large I have to be before I even toy with the idea of outsourcing, i do believe that we should hire people that are experts in their field we just keep the ball rolling to make sure they have the work to do. I am a very small enterprise but would like to make it an huge park someday. Thanks for the valued information.
  • jkoritz: You do not have to be a large business to outsource. Many small business today are outsourcing to expand on the services that they can offer their clients. My company, CaptureISG, specializes in employee satisfaction surveys and exit interviews. We work with many Human Resource providers that offer our services to their clients and they are making a profit from doing so - virtually without lifting a finger!

You should think about other products or services that your clients or customers might be interested in and try to find a strategic partner that specializes in that. If you are not sure what that is, ask them! People are usually glad to give their feedback.
  • You don't get large, then outsource. You get large by outsourcing. You need to take risk, you need to put something of value on the line if you are to build a new asset that has value. Its the law of the jungle.

If you are an affiliate selling 3rd party products or services that's different. You're not building a business (asset). You're a new age sales person who gets paid commissions to sell other peoples products or services.
  • Outsourcing has been crucial to me. I do not want to nor do I want to learn some skills. There are something I just need someone else for. Everyone has their strengths in my eyes so when I find that right person for my fit its almost wonderful as I get that job done and do not have that pressure, in a way I hand it over and give them expectations and expect excellence. It raises the bar to as everyone stays in their own expertise.
